The iPhone 14 appears same as the iPhone 13, but there is a new 6.7-inch device called the iPhone 14 Plus. Under the hood, 6GB of memory, a 5-core GPU, Bluetooth 5.3, and numerous camera updates. (PRODUCT)RED, blue, purple, midnight, and starlight are on the color palette.
On September 7, 2022, Apple announced the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 at the “Far Out” Apple event. These devices are similar to their predecessors, except for the larger 6.7-inch model.
The iPhone 14 Pro lineup underwent more significant changes, widening the gap between pro and base models. Still, customers can expect consistent features and prices from top to bottom.
Features:
Apple has maintained its strategy of providing identical feature sets across devices in the same device class. Apart from the display size and battery life, the larger iPhone 14 Plus has no unique features.
There is no iPhone mini in this generation. Apple is no longer adding the mini series to the iPhone.
Camera:
Apple upgraded the Camera, formerly the Wide Camera, with a larger 12MP sensor and a wider f/1.5 aperture. This allows for better photo quality and faster low-light performance. Apple claims a 49% improvement in low light.
The Ultra Wide Camera remains unchanged, and there was still no mention of the macro photography feature being made available to non-professional phones. Apple need to add autofocus to the Ultra Wide Camera in order to enable the feature.
The front cameras aperture and autofocus comes with f/1.9. The selfie camera can take faster and better photos when combined with the depth sensors used for Face ID,
Furthermore, advances in the chipset allow 4K recording when using Cinematic Mode. Users can choose between 30fps and 24fps to benefit from improved camera performance.
Design:
Aside from minor color changes, the iPhone 14 resembles the iPhone 13 it replaces. The same notch, diagonal rear camera system, and aluminum chassis. The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display has a pixel density of 460ppi.
The larger iPhone 14 Plus is a new model, but it retains all of the features of the smaller model, including the same-sized camera bump. It has a 458ppi 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display. It does not, however, have ProMotion like the pro and pro max model size it is emulating.
The displays, like the iPhone 13, support HDR and True Tone and have a P3 color gamut. In regular use, the OLED has a contrast ratio of 2 million to 1 and a brightness of 800 nits.
The only notable design difference between the devices is the absence of a SIM card tray in the US version. Apple has move all-in on e-SIM support, so users will no longer have to deal with physical cards.
Satellite SOS:
Apple created custom antennas and equipment to allow the latest iPhones to connect to a satellite mile above the Earth’s surface without using a massive antenna module. This system is primarily for emergency use.
Users can activate Emergency SOS via satellite to send a distress signal if they have a clear view of the sky or are beneath light foliage. The device will guide the user through prompts to ensure that communication is brief but detailed.
To receive the best signal from the satellite The user interface on display will show direction to point the iPhone to. Messages sent this way can take between 15 seconds and several minutes to relay.
This has a non-emergency application as well. The iPhone can use a satellite signal if a user wishes to notify friends or family of their location in the wilderness.
Crash Detection:
The iPhone or Apple Watch will call 911 if the user is in a car accident. Crash Detection sensors and algorithms are built-in into the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple Watch Ultra, second-generation Apple Watch SE, and Watch Series 8. They will work together if both devices are present, to determine whether or not a crash has occurred. However, the technology could be more foolproof and triggered by non-crash events like roller coasters.
Crash Detection employs a high g-force accelerometer, upgraded high dynamic range gyroscope, microphone, GPS, barometer, and advanced motion algorithms to determine if a severe crash occurred. Apple created the algorithm to detect frontal impacts, side impacts, rear-end collisions, and rollovers.
If the user recognizes the alert within ten seconds, another timer of ten seconds begins. Following that, emergency services are going to call.
An automated message with an estimated location and search radius on a loop will be played to emergency services. Each replay will play back slower to allow the user to speak with emergency services, and a button can be pressed to stop the recorded playback.
A call will be made to emergency contacts after the emergency services are detached.
Minor crashes won’t activate Crash Detection. The accelerometer uses the information gathered from other sensors to assess whether a collision took place. It is capable of detecting forces up to 256G.
Although the outcomes vary, some users claim that false accidents can find on roller coasters. Given the complexity of the process, Apple claims there isn’t a “silver bullet” explanation that pinpoints correctly when Crash Detection kicks in.
Processor:
Apple saved the most recent A16 Bionic processor for the iPhone 14 Pro series, leaving the A15 Bionic in place. This is the iPhone 13 Pro’s version of the processor, not the one utilized by the iPhone 13.
It boasts a 5-core GPU, allowing for better processing throughout the system and in some apps. Because of this upgraded processor, the iPhone 14 can access the improved 4K Cinematic Mode.
Face ID is still hidden behind the same-sized notch as the iPhone 13 and has yet to receive an upgrade. However, iOS 16 allows users to unlock their iPhone 14 in either portrait or landscape mode.
The U1, 5G, and WiFi connectivity were not changed for the iPhone 14 series. Apple did, however, add the more recent Bluetooth 5.3 specification. Although Bluetooth 5.3 is also used by the AirPods Pro 2, no details were given on its advantages.
iPhone 14 Review:
The iPhone 14 is a flagship phone with a good value mix of features. However, existing iPhone models make comparison difficult.
The camera system has seen minor improvements, but overall photo quality remains consistent. The selfie camera is marginally better as well.
Crash Detection will undoubtedly be another feature that we hear about regularly. To determine if a crash has occurred, the high dynamic range gyroscope and dual-core accelerometer sense up to 256g of force.
Apple has also added a new SOS via satellite feature for contacting emergency services with no cell signal. While very few users need to use it, knowing it is available in an emergency provides peace of mind.
Apple reused the A15 Bionic processor found in iPhone 13 Pro models for the base iPhone 14 models. It is a slight improvement in performance year over year.
Anyone upgrading from an iPhone 13 will see no reason to purchase this device. It’s a good product, but Apple has plenty of competing options within striking distance.
iPhone 14 Plus Review:
Apple’s decision to replace the iPhone mini with a 6.7″ iPhone Plus was the best decision made during this product cycle. It provides a large-screen upgrade option for those who don’t wish to pay the “pro” premium.
Aside from the larger display and a small camera bump, there isn’t much to distinguish the iPhone 14 Plus design. It has a larger battery, which translates to longer battery life, but most other specifications carry from the standard model.
The return of the A15 Bionic in the larger iPhone is less notable because it scored nearly identical to the base model. Benchmarks show that, despite using a year-old processor, Apple outperforms the competition in terms of performance and graphics.
There are no surprises with the camera system. The Main Camera now has a larger sensor, which, when combined with the Photonic Engine, results in a 49% improvement in low-light performance.
Other camera enhancements include 4K 30fps Cinematic Mode and Action Mode.
A better f/1.9 aperture helped the selfie camera improve as well. It also gains new capabilities, such as the Photonic Engine.
Crash detection, Satellite Emergency SOS, Bluetooth 5.3, and 5G are all included. These upgrades and features are similer to the other iPhone 14 models so we won’t go over them again.
A larger iPhone with the same features as its smaller counterpart isn’t much different. Since the products are comparable, consumers must choose according to their personal preferences.
iPhone 14 series price:
Both models come in the colors (PRODUCT)RED, blue, purple, midnight, and starlight. Storage configuration options include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
On September 16, 2022, customer orders for the iPhone 14 started to arrive for a starting price of $799. The iPhone 14 Plus is available starting on October 7 for $899.
