The revolutionary Mahindra Scorpio entered the Indian automotive market two decades ago. Before the debut of the first-generation Scorpio (now sold as the Scorpio Classic), the company was known for the Mahindra Armada, Classic, and Bolero. These cars had a similar design language to the American Jeep. However, fast-forward to 2022, Mahindra and Mahindra continued the legacy of the Scorpio by introducing the second-generation model. The Scorpio-N now boasts a long list of features and looks more premium on the inside and the outside. So, what makes the 2022 Scorpio one of the most anticipated SUVs in India? Let’s find out!
A Premium Exterior
The Mahindra Scorpio-N’s exterior looks upmarket and has an elevated sense of design. The SUV still retains the Scorpio silhouette, and its front three-quarter profile more or less resembles the Mahindra XUV700. At the front, the Scorpio-N features a chrome grille with six vertical chrome slats flanked by a pair of LED headlights. On the other hand, the lower section of the front bumper boasts LED C-shaped DRLs and a chain-like mesh grille. However, the front end of this new SUV is slightly more upright now.
As for the rear-end, it gets tall tail-lights like the Volvo XC90. The tailgate gets the maker’s and model’s badges and the new Mahindra logo. The lower section of the rear bumper gets a chrome insert flanked by reflectors on either side. However, the rest of the body panels consist of a shark-fin antenna, black cladding, and roof rails. It also features a defined shoulder line that runs from the front fender to the rear fender to give a muscular look.
Apart from that, the Mahindra Scorpio-N dimensions measure 4662 mm in length, 1917 mm in width and 1857 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750 mm. With these figures, the Scorpio-N is now longer, wider and has a longer wheelbase than the Classic. But its height is now shorter by 138mm than the Mahindra Classic’s 1995mm.
Time to ingress now.
A Plush N-terior
Mahindra and Mahindra have done a great job in designing the cabin. The Mahindra Scorpio-N interior gets a dual-tone colour scheme of brown and black. In the centre, it gets a touchscreen infotainment system with controls and rotary dials, and the lower section panel gets HVAC controls. The infotainment system also has access to the car’s features and settings and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The centre console features a leather-wrapped gearbox, dual-cupholders and a centre armrest with storage inside. Speaking of storage, you can also store your sunglasses in the sunglass holder. Another storage place is the cooled glove box, where you can refrigerate your beverages to beat the heat. However, it misses out on ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and ADAS.
In addition, there are also brushed-metal accents around the infotainment screen, A/C vents, and door panels. It also gets a multi-function steering wheel, a new instrument cluster, all-powered windows, and electrically adjustable ORVMs, to name a few. It also gets an electrically adjustable seat, but only on the driver’s side. Apart from that, it should offer you better legroom as the Scorpio-N gets an extended wheelbase. That said, the third row can be a compromise, as most of the available seven-seater SUVs in India tend to offer poor legroom. That means it’s ideal for short journeys. Moreover, the passenger can also enjoy the Sony-sourced surround sound system connected to the phone while charging on the wireless charging tray.
Also, please note that the features will vary across the variants.
On the safety front, the Mahindra Scorpio-N is well-equipped. It gets six airbags, ABS EBD with ESC, driver drowsiness detection, and hill assist, to name a few. In addition, the Mahindra Scorpio-N hasn’t been crash-tested yet. But Mr. Mahindra is confident about the 2022 Scorpio-N’s five-star safety rating.
The core of the SUV
The 2022 Scorpio-N gets two turbo-powered engine options on offer. It is available with a 2-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine that generates 198bhp and 370Nm of torque (380Nm for AT).
The 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel unit has two states of tune: 130bhp and 300Nm of torque, 172bhp and 370Nm (400Nm for AT). These engines are available with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The drivetrain options on the Scorpio-N include RWD and AWD.

The Ackers, Variants, and Rivals
The Scorpio-N’s price starts at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the base model, Scorpio N-Z2. And, it goes up to Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the top model, Scorpio-N Z8L. The Scorpio-N will be available along with the Scorpio Classic. Moreover, the Scorpio-N has four broad trims: Z2, Z4, Z6, and Z8.
The SUV is also available with six- and seven-seater configurations.
As for rivalry, the Mahindra Scorpio-N’s competitors are Tata’s Harrier and Safari, Hyundai’s Creta and Alcazar, MG Hector, Kia Seltos, etc.
However, at the same time, the carmaker announced that the “add-to-cart” option wouldn’t appear on the official website, nor would the test drives until July 5th. Bookings will also commence from July 30th. Therefore, deliveries will most likely begin from Dusshera onwards only.
